The First International Conference on Translational Medicine (ICTM2011) raised its curtain at 8:30 A.M., 22rd Oct., Wenzhou, China, with the mission on promoting scientific communication between biologists and clinicians, between academics and companies, thus convert the scientific knowledge into therapeutic approaches and clinical application.
Actually, a powerful presentation team under the leadership of Prof. Jeffery Drazen, Chief Editor of New England Journal, composed of 25 internationally renowned professors, were invited from 9 countries and regions, namely, United State of America, Austria, Romania, Sweden, Germany, Japan, Spain, Italy and China, to give as many as 25 lectures in total from different aspects on the latest progress and development strategy of translational medicine and the potential for collaboration and development. The very international academic conference of high level and quality attracted more than 200 participants to attend.
The conference was presided over by Prof. Xiangdong Wang, Executive Vice President of ISTM2011, Director of Biomedical Research Center, Fudan University Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai, China, with Prof. Jia Qu, President of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy, Wenzhou, China appointed as the Chairman of Organizing Committee ICTM2011, and Prof. Jeffery Drazen, Chief Editor of New England Journal, Prof. Laurentiu M. Popescu, Vice-President (President-Elect) of the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM),Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Cell & Molecular Medicine, Prof. Francesco M Marincola, director of the NIH, President of ISTM2011, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Translational Medicine appointed as the Co-Chairmen.
Yangjun Qiu, Deputy Mayor of Wenzhou City, was invited to address the Opening Ceremony on behalf of Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee and Government. He extended a warm welcome to all the participants from both at home and abroad, appreciated all the efforts and achievements made by Wenzhou Medical Universtiy and the First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy, acknowledged the necessity of Translational Medicine Development and the urgent needs for converting the scientific knowledge into therapeutic approaches and clinical application. He said that the local government would like to pave the way for the Development of Translational Medicine. Besides, he made an introduction of Wenzhou, especially its history, economic development, culture and civilization and wished all a pleasant stay in Wenzhou which may leave with them deep impressions for quite a long time.
Prof. Jia Qu delivered a welcome speech as Chairman of Organizing Committee ICTM2011, during which he said, although China remained in its early and exploratory stage, striving for breakthroughs and collaborations on translational medicine and clinical application, he had the confidence that China was to achieve a rapid development with the support by the Government and the increasingly attentions paid from more and more Scientists, clinicians, researchers and biotechnology companies working on translational medicine and medical technologies.
He also took the opportunity to introduce Medical College of Wenzhou to all the participants in brief. He said, Wenzhou Medical Universtiy would like to take responsibility and make due contributions to the development of translational medicine for this area, for China and for the world. To conclude, he hoped that ICTM2011 would contribute a lot to the translational medicine developments, especially by helping to form the platform for communication and cross-fertilization among clinicians and researchers from all science fields with an interest in translational medicine.
During the ICTM2011, Prof. Xiaoming Chen, Vice President of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy(WMC), President of The First Hospital of WMC, arranged some meetings with several professors of those invited in succession, aimed at enhancing further collaborations that concerned. Late in the afternoon on 22rd OCT. after lectures given, Prof. Xiaoming Chen showed all the speakers invited to Chashan Campus of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy, as well as the new site of the the First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy, when he made a brief introduction on the development and present situation of both Wenzhou Medical Universtiy and the First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy. On behave of the local organizing committee, he also expressed the respect and warm welcome to all the participants at the Welcome Banquet in their honor. Then again, he pointed out the importance and intention on further collaborations as he had always been emphasizing.
Translational Medicine, just as the name implies, refers to further break the barriers between basic medicine and clinic medicine, to accelerate the progress that could translate basic research achievements to clinical therapies effectively. ICTM2011 was successfully held during 22-23 OCT. to the extent that bridged academics and companies on the collaboration of translational medicine and clinical applications, thus encouraged collaborative teams of diverse investigators to tackle complex health and research challenges and then find ways to turn their discoveries into practical solutions for patients, enabled innovative research teams to speed the rate at which research progress actually improves healthcare practice and community health, or rather, our nation’s health.
The First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy has established the Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) on March this year, making progress across a broad range of research, such as stem cell transplantation, human tissue bank and protein, among which some has entered the stage of clinical and genetic experiments and are to be applied as the normal treatments after a year if nothing unexpected happened. On the heels of ICTM2011, lectures on PHD courses, another program initiated by the International Society for Translational Medicine (ISTM) and ITM of the First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy , were well under way from 24-27th , OCT.. One of the professors giving lectures was appointed as the adjunct professor of The First Hospital of Wenzhou Medical Universtiy by Prof.Qichuan Zhuge, Deputy President responsible for Scientific Research and Foreign Affairs, adding to the existing 7 adjunct professors.
