Pancreatitis Treatment Center
Founded in August 2017, the Pancreatitis Treatment Center（PTC） of the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University is the first medical unit in China specialized in treating pancreatitis. PTC is dominated by surgery departments, united with multiple dicplines and run as an entity. PTC applies the comprehensive treatment protocol created by Professor, Zhou Mengtao, one of the Outstanding Mid-aged Expert in China, candidate of National Hundred, Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project and Senior Specialist of Zhejiang Province. The treatment protocol was awarded the First Prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award and First Prize of Scientific and Technological Award of the People's Government of Zhejiang Province with case fatality rate(CFR) lower than 1.0%, that significantly shortens hospitalization period and cuts the medical costs. Thus PTC is regarded as one of the best pancreatitis treatment units in China.
Severe acute pancreatitis is a significant threat to people’s health, with acute symptoms and great difficulty in treatment. The average global CFR is approximately 15% at present. CFR reaches two death peaks during the pathological process, with multiple organ failure in the early stage around 65%, and necrosis and infection in the late stage around 30%. From 1995, aiming at lower CFR, Professor Zhou Mengtao focuses on the very two stages mentioned above with strategy of “prevention rather than treatments”, he set up a combined strategy of regional arterial perfusion, SIRS regulation, MODS screening and pancreatic necrosis followed by infection, as well as some core technologies like biliary pancreatitis treatment in different types, emphasized in Initiative Prevention, Preemptive Treatment and Refined Remedy, which has successfuly lowered CFR from 14.4% to 4.6%, thus remarkably improved the prognosis of severe acute pancreatitis.
Since the establishment of PTC, it has properly applied the comprehensive treatment system of severe acute pancreatitis by Professor Zhou Mengtao on each case of hospitalized patient of this disease, and the standardized and systematic treatment has seen steady improvement of the cure rate, with the CFR further reduced to 1.0% on the previous base of lowering it from 14.6% to 4.6% , achieving immeasurable clinical and social values. It has been proved that PTC changes the traditional clinical management mode that various departments, including the gastroenterology, general surgery, ICU, emergency department, treating severe acute pancreatitis patients in their own ways respectively, creates a new clinical management mode on severe acute pancreatitis in China, and makes a breakthrough in the treatment of severe acute pancreatitis.
Focusing on single sort disease, PTC strives to promote multi-disciplinary programs followed by the principle of integrating “patient care, education and research”. The center is equipped with 44 beds, including 4 in PICU, 6 in severe ward. It has the Key Laboratory on New Technology of Treating Difficult Pancreas and Liver Diseases of Zhejiang Province, Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery Laboratory of Wenzhou Medical University, Precision Medical Center, Pancreatitis Clinical Database and Clinical Specimen Bank. In addition, PTC also runs the Journal of Hepato-pancreato-biliary Surgery. Up to now, PTC has published more than 30 papers in international core journals, with research findings went down in 9 monographs, including “Qianli Abdominal Surgery”, which were internationally acknowledged according to Sci-Tech novelty retrieval and Peer evaluations. Technologies of PTC are partly promoted in some hospitals of the nation and achieve sound social and economic benefits.
In 2014, the projoect “the Breakthrough and Application of Key Technology on Treatment of Severe Acute Pancreatitis” was awarded the first prize of Scientific and Technological Award of the People's Government of Zhejiang Province. In 2016, the project was later awarded the first prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, which is the most prestigious honor in medical and scientific fields in China, and it’s the first time for this prize to be awarded in the pancreatic surgery field.
PTC mainly treats diseases including but not limited to: severe acute pancreatitis, explosive pancreatitis, pancreatitis complicated with ventricular septal syndrome, biliary pancreatitis, hyperlipidemia pancreatitis, post-ERCP pancreatitis and chronic pancreatitis.
